Heartburn
Heartburn (hyperacidity) is a painful, burning sensation just above the stomach, behind the breastbone, and sometimes in the throat. Some people experience it as a constricting sensation behind the breastbone. This happens when stomach acid enters the esophagus. It causes symptoms such as burping and a full feeling after a meal. These usually arise when the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach doesn't work well. A hiatal hernia can also be the cause. Everything we consume via the mouth passes through the esophagus into the stomach. The esophagus is connected to the stomach just under the midriff. The muscles in the midriff ensure that stomach acid and the food in the stomach cannot reenter the esophagus easily.
